Since 1987, Suriname has been an independent republic. It's political institutions are defined by the constitution of 1987. The National Assembly is made up of fifty-one members who are elected for a five-year term by proportional representation. The president is elected by a two-thirds majority in the Assembly. Cabinet ministers are appointed by the president. The Council of State, chaired by the president and including political parties, business, trade unions, and representatives of the military, can veto legislation that violates the constitution.
